Why TypeCraft exists

Choosing a typeface is one of the highest-leverage decisions in any design project, but most font directories treat the choice like shopping for shoes — endless rows of identical thumbnails, no real way to filter by intent, and no honest information about what each face is actually good at. TypeCraft is a different kind of directory. Every typeface in our catalog is open-source and free to use commercially, with no asterisk and no dark-pattern paid tier. Every page is server-rendered HTML, so the catalog loads instantly, works without JavaScript, and stays accessible to screen readers, scrapers, and search crawlers alike.

Under the hood, TypeCraft mirrors the public Google Fonts open-source catalog — over 1,929 families designed and contributed by independent type designers, foundries, and academic researchers from every continent. We surface the metadata that matters: the designer credit, the license, the available weights and styles, the supported writing systems, and the date the family entered the catalog. We also write a substantial, hand-authored description for every typeface in the catalog, so that you can read about a face before you commit to setting a paragraph in it.

The directory is organised three ways. By category follows the classical typographic divisions: serif, sans-serif, display, handwriting, and monospace. By use case sorts the catalog by the job you are trying to do — headings, body text, display, monospace, UI design. And the full A-to-Z list lets you scroll the entire library, paginated for sanity. Every link on this site lands on a real, complete page. There are no dead ends, no JavaScript-only routes, and no premium paywalls.
